Race Recap: Big Ten Network 10k (& 5k)

"Why did I ever stop running races?"

That is the question that plagued my mind the afternoon and days following the Big Ten Network 10k / 5k on Saturday the 25th. Despite setting a PW (personal worst) during this race by FAR, I still realized that I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the environment and overall ambiance of race day. Here's how things went:

My brother in-law, Eric, and I got up at 5am to drive to downtown Chicago for the race. We parked near Solider Field ($20 - always a bummer) which was very close to the course and the festivities, however. This was Eric's first race EVER, and he informed me that he hadn't slept very well the night before due to nerves - rookie move.

We got there early enough to watch the 10k start at 7:00am as well as watch the first finishers cross the line. I still can't get over how fast the elite runners knock these things out! We also had plenty of time to walk around the grounds and check out all the festivities that were offered.

There were football combine activities such as field goal kicking, a 40-yard dash and vertical leap; a dozen bags / cornhole sets were set up to use; and each school had their own tent set up with goodies. Since Eric doesn't much care for college sports and I am a Wisconsin Badger through and through, we visited the UW tent. They had Paul Bunyan's Axe on display - the annual trophy that is rewarded to the victor of the Wisconsin v. Minnesota football game, as well as the West Regional trophy the men's basketball team won by defeating Kentucky earlier this year. I wonder what the other tents had. They were probably handing out written apologies to their respective fan bases.

The school mascots were out in full force as well, except Illinois. I'm guessing the P.C. folks still frown upon Chief Illiniwek galloping in on his stallion or something. Even though little kids were scrambling to get photos with the mascots, I made sure to push my way through for a nice shot with Bucky Badger. Gotta throw up the W!

Finally it was time for the 5k to kick off and, as we were waiting for Corral C to make it to the Start Line, I repeated to Eric to just take off and leave me behind - since I knew there wasn't a chance that I was going to run the same pace as him. He'd been training for the last, few months and I'd put my running shoes on that morning (for the purpose of running) for the first time in a year or so (or at least it felt that way). I'd come to peace with the fact that this race was going to take potentially 50% longer than it ever has in the past, and that I just needed to gut it out and get it done.

Sure enough. The race took forever, and my feet / knees stopped wanting to work before anything else - they just were sick of shuffling this much weight around. And I don't blame 'em! It wasn't fun, but I finished - with a lousy time of 46:48. Woof. But definitely an eye-opener. I'm super proud of Eric, he knocked out his first 5k with a time of 30:26, after setting a goal of sub-31:00.

But even though I physically did not enjoy this race, it still made me want to get back into the swing of things. Eric quickly said he was already hooked, so hopefully he'll drag me along to more races. Time to look for the next one!

The Injury Bug Strikes!

All the way back in May, I announced that I was going to tackle my first FULL marathon after a few years on the bench. But, as you can already probably predict by the title of this post, that will not be happening anymore.

About a month ago, while up at a summer camp with friends and family from church, I tried to participate in the annual sand volleyball tournament. Well, my knee felt otherwise. During our second game of the tournament, it decided to buckle underneath my overweight-ness (accompanied by three, terrifying pops) with a little help from the uneven, shifting, soft sand court. Awesome. At least my team went on to win the tournament without me!

As you can see, my right knee swelled up nice and big...
After getting back from camp, I wasn't able to get to the orthopedic doctor for 2.5 weeks. By then, things had started to settle down a little bit - I was able to walk without a limp, and it really only hurt when doing a squatting motion or trying to jog. The doctor didn't really find anything wrong either, with the exception of a half-hearted, hail mary "possible torn meniscus" diagnosis. He suggested I head to physical therapy for 6-8 weeks and get back to him after that. While there, they further diagnosed a hamstring strain and possible meniscus tear. Splendid.

So since then I've been forced to deal with the reality that I won't be able to finish training for the marathon in two months. I've fallen extremely far behind in my training, and don't want to risk further injury by trying to rush back into things. The icing on the cake is that I can't get sell my registration to someone else either, since the race is a Boston qualifier. Better believe I'm going to pick up my swag bag though!

Come Along With Me

I hope this doesn't come off as being overly vain, but since I started my weight loss journey back in January of 2009, I've wanted to be able to document my progress (actual progress, not treading water) as I lose weight, and show people what I'm accomplishing, how I'm changing, and hopefully inspire some people along the way.

At first I tried doing weigh in updates on YouTube and then those eventually fell off when my progress slowed and eventually reversed. I tried joining challenges and contests on YouTube as well, thinking that it would provide a new kind of motivation and encouragement in an 'online community' sort of environment where like-minded people would push me in the right direction. Those would start off with enthusiasm and effort (and results!), but then also taper off before the contest would finish.

I've also joined weight loss Facebook groups with friends, hoping that our words of support and personal challenges would get me over the hump - but that just turned into a place for people to feel less guilty about admitting they had a terrible weekend (and gained 5 poiunds) and then still just recieved the "aww, you'll get 'em next time" type of response. Not helpful. And now finally, I've been using this blog as a means of sharing this part of my life with you.

To date, my progress during the life of this blog has been up and down at best. I'd sign up for races and then slack during my training, only to downgrade the race distance the week prior. I'd let you all know about how I'm embarking on this huge, 365-day transformation journey only to fizzle out in less than a week and hope you forgot about the original post.

So I don't blame any of you if you've stopped reading or paying attention to my sorry attempt at weight loss.

But this time it feels different.

Rather than trying to put myself on a diet that doesn't allow me to eat certain things (Atkins, South Beach, etc), I've begun making smart, lifestyle choices in my nutrition that I find to be much more sustainable and less restrictive and suffocating. Most of the time I try a diet, I find that the fact that I cannot eat certain things, makes me crave them even more. And as the pressure builds up, it's only a matter of time before I erupt and binge on things like fast food, soda, chips, etc. But now I realize the need for moderation and if I have chips, I just grab a handful, or I make a smart choice at the fast food restaurant (something I haven't had to face YET), or I just drink water instead of hitting up the break room fridge for Pepsi!

And making these smart, small choices every day gives me confidence in its potential sustainability. It also gives me a sense of pride that I can in fact do this without breaking, and momentum to keep moving in the right direction. And as you can see by my "Progress" stats below my picture on the right, so far so good!
The key will be to see how things continue once I'm two, three, six weeks down the road. It's been quite a while since I've been able to sustain constant weight loss for more than two weeks, so the moment of truth is still ahead of me. And if the day comes where I do end up binging on something, I need to have the control to realize it's only one day and get back on track right away. Unfortunately, I'm used to letting one bad day turn into a week of bad choices...

But I hope that your waning faith in me can be restored in the near future as you read about my progress - and hopefully see it physically as well (I'll be adding a stats page to this blog soon)!

September Goals

Well here we are, with yet ANOTHER month behind us in 2012, and ANOTHER month closer to the end of the world as we know it (if you're Mayan). That means we're also at that time where I lay out my goals for this coming month.

I know, I know... I still have yet to reach many of my past, monthly goals. Believe me, I'm more disappointed about it than you are! At the end of each 30 days, it really is kind of depressing to see the lack of progress in my weight loss journey. But the past is the past, and I can only focus on today! So here we go!

1. This may sound crazy to some of you, but I really want to be able to do away with soda this month. Some days it is a really big struggle to stay away from the carbonation when it's free for the taking (and unlimited) here at work, so I really want to buckle down and eliminate that. Going to be tough!

2. I also am going to start incorporating weight lifting into my workout routine this month. Once my race is finished on Sunday, I'm planning on focusing more on full-body fitness rather than just being able to log enough miles for a race.

3. I'm also going to work out 5 or 6 days per week (Mon-Sat). Even if I have weird work hours due to international shows, there's still no reason I can't find time to sweat a bit.

4. I also want to improve my stature as a blogger (see previous post). Instead of simply reporting on my progress, I want to improve my knowledge in the realm of health and fitness and therefore will be reading articles and such, and will be giving my response/thoughts on facts or articles I read. Let's get some knowledge, people!

5. Oh yeah, and let's lose 15 pounds this month, shall we? (would take me down to 260)

I also made a YouTube video today talking about these as well, enjoy!

A 365-Day Transformation?

On days such as this (my birthday), I find it hard not to evaluate the year that was, and the potential of the year to come. Unfortunately - and only due to a result of my own efforts - I haven't seen much progress in the health & fitness arena since I turned 27 last year. But I'll get back to this in a second...

The rest of my life, however, has changed quite a bit! Back in September of last year I married my wife and best friend, and in March I started my first, official full-time job in downtown Chicago (after a few years of freelance/part-time gigs). Even scored a new car last month! Just about every other aspect of my life has improved since my last birthday. So why not this last part?

Now don't get me wrong - this isn't me lamenting about how bad my life is AT ALL. I am so happy for all the blessings I have received between 8/6/2011 and 8/6/2012 and I wouldn't go back and do a single thing differently. As far as weight loss goes, the past is the past - and now it's time to only look at today and set goals for this next year of my life.

My primary verse for the next 365 days

I'm a big fan of Chris Powell and his show Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition on Sunday nights. Instead of a 'ranch' format of group training a la Biggest Loser, he takes on a client one-on-one for an entire year to completely transform them. Now I'm not looking to lose half of my body weight (thankfully I haven't let myself go THAT much), but I am going to aim for my goal weight by my birthday next year - so I have 365 days to do so.

So beginning tomorrow, I will weigh myself, take pictures and measurements and establish my official "starting (over)" position. More details will come in tomorrow's post pertaining to my plan on how I will approach the next 365 days.

Let me know what things have worked for you that you think I should include in my plan!

July Goals!

Well, now that you've seen how I did on my June goals, I think it's time to step it up for the month of July. Some say I may have set my bar a little too high out of the gate, but I still think I underperformed and can do much better in July.

I think I'm really going to like this infrastructure I am setting up for myself - weekly (give or take a day) video updates/weigh ins coupled with monthly goals and report cards. I'd start looking forward to yearly events, but let's hope that I'm not fighting this battle for another three years and am just blogging about all the races I'm doing and PR's I'm setting! :)

But without further stalling ado, let's ring in the new month of July with another set of attainable goals (both fitness-related and otherwise)!

- Weigh 250 (or less) by my b-day (August 6!)*
- Drink at least 100oz of water per day
- Read one Runner's World & one Men's Health
- Start saving $$ for a new car
- Complete every day of my 1/2 marathon training schedule
- Join the "Plank a Day" movement
- Bigger social media reach

* NOTE: I will be gone on vacation from July 28-August 5, so I won't be able to weigh in until Monday, August 6th - my birthday!

For vacation, my wife and I will be heading up to Silver Birch Ranch in Northern Wisconsin. A place like this has rock climbing, kayaking, swimming, horseback riding and acres of land for hiking and exploring. I really want to get some of this weight off so I can enjoy some/all of these activities!

Anyway, let me know your thoughts on my second round of goals! What are some of your summer goals?

June 2012 Report Card

A few weeks ago I wrote a post listing some of my goals for the month of June 2012. Now that we've found ourselves in July, I figured it'd be a good time to step back and look at how I did! I'm going to be doing something like this each month using the title of "Report Card" - I think it'll be fun! Well...unless I end up with a big, fat "F"

Below I have listed the goals that I stated back towards the beginning of June. I've graded each individual goal (kind of like as if they were their own class in school). *GULP*

1. Lose 15-20 pounds so I can get myself back into the 250s - D+
2. Avoid all non-diet soda - B+
3. Be able to run 5 miles without stopping - C-
4. Gain 50 combined Twitter followers/YouTube subscribers/Facebook page 'Likes' - A-
5. Blog at least once a week - A
6. Read one Runner's World and one Men's Health - F

OVERALL: C

So let's walk through these in a little more detail, shall we?

1. I gave myself a D+ for losing weight because I have lost about 5 of those 15-20 pounds. Percentage-wise that probably warrants an F, but I know the effort I've been putting in lately. Definitely room for improvement!

2. I've been doing pretty decent on the soda, but a few times in the last month I gave into the orange Crush in the fridge at work. Free stuff is so hard to pass up sometimes!

3. I'm just kicking off my half marathon training, so the endurance isn't quite there yet for five miles. I've logged a lot of treadmill time in June, but wasn't pushing myself hard enough to increase endurance. Kind of just settled for the running/walking pattern.

4. These numbers SHOULD be easy to track, but then again, I failed to take note of where all the stats stood when the month started...whoops! I have, however, upped my Facebook and Twitter 'likes'/'follows' quite a bit, because I've seen all the notification emails that have come through my inbox. Thanks to everyone for joining me!

5. I think I've stayed pretty on top of this one. I think things here at the blog are really gaining some momentum, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the opportunities that come from this here site.

6. The closest I got to reading my mags was packing them in my backpack last weekend when we went camping. I have them on my person a LOT, but have never found myself unoccupied enough to bust them out and flip some pages.

Looking back, this month hasn't been anywhere near a TOTAL loss. I've made some solid steps forward, and plan to carry the progress over into July. And don't worry, I'll have a July Goals post up REAL soon! (Probably later today)

Weekly Update #2

If you haven't heard, I'm doing weekly progress updates on my YouTube channel. Now I've tried doing this type of thing before, but I would just cowardly fade away once I started doing poorly. Let's not let that happen this time around, shall we?

Anyway, I'm just about done with quite the whirlwind of a week, and unfortunately it took a toll on my activity levels and discipline along the way. Had a wrench thrown in my routine - had to take a personal day off of work due to a death in the family, was asked to work from home twice this week, and even worked from a different office for a day. All these things threw curveballs at me and I wasn't ready.

When I can settle into a routine and know ahead of time what I have coming up, it gives me a better chance to plan out my meals and gym times. When things get kind of hectic and are thrown off-kilter, it gives me less time and warning to plan things out. With less time to plan, I'm more susceptible to giving in to spontaneous temptations (snacking, sleeping in) and therefore sabotaging my goals.

But the B-Side of that is that when I DO give in to the temptations of immediate gratification, I continue to give in the next time, and the time after that - each instance where I display a lack of discipline makes it easier to give in the following time. That's where the change needs to happen.

I mean, let's face it - no one rarely anyone can keep on point 100% of the time. We all mess up at one time or another! It's how we respond to that lapse in discipline that defines our journey and self-control. For me, it's been a week of good, followed by a bad Saturday, followed by a bad week, which turns into two weeks... You get the point.

That is the piece of the puzzle that I need to figure out for when these lapses come. Once I learn to stop the bleeding once the cut occurs, I'll be in great shape when the next temptation comes around.

90 Degrees Ain't Got Nothin' On Me

So if you leave in, near, or around Chicago, you'd have to be an Eskimo living in some wonder-of-technology igloo to not know that it's mighty warm this week. I'm talking it's so hot, that you have no choice but to learn how to drive with two fingers because your car steering wheel is so hot. It's brutal.

Yeah, that's the kind of day that I decided to do some track runs at the local high school - out of doors. I got this grand idea on my drive home from work, for some reason, and fueled it by looking up some different types of workouts one can do on a track. Here's the one I decided to 'go' with:

1) Walk one, warm-up lap
2) Jog three laps very easy
3) Walk one lap
4) Run two laps at a fast pace
5) Walk one lap
* Repeat entire thing twice
6) Walk the curves and sprint the straights
*Repeat for two laps

So this routine looked mighty good on paper when I was sitting in the comfort of my home, but once my feet hit the track and sun beat down on me, things kind of changed. Here's what I ended up doing instead...

1) Walk one, warm-up lap
2) Run 3 laps at a pace faster than I'm used to (since I can't run a steady pace outdoors)
3) Suck down some water
4) Walk one lap
5) Run 2 laps at the same pace as #2, maybe slower
6) Walk one lap
7) Down more water
8) Run one lap
9) Walk one lap
10) Walk straights and "sprint" curves (for 3 laps)
11) Run one lap at 7.5 mph
12) Drink more water
13) Stumble to car and drive home
14) Take freezing cold shower

Ok, so maybe things didn't work out as I had planned, but I was glad to do something different for a change. Running on the treadmill day in and day out gets a little monotonous after a while, and apparently running in the comforts of a building with AC was getting old too.

This was also the first time I synced my Nike+ GPS app to Facebook and had friends 'cheer' me on as I ran. It was kind of cool that whenever someone commented on my post online, it played applause and cheering into my headphones - so thanks to those who did so!

Also, I made a stop at the local Jewel and scored some protein powdah (Boston accent). Looking forward to seeing what benefits I can reap from using that!

I know some of you have been braving the heat to get some runs here and there - more power to you! I now know what that all entails - whew!

My (Slightly Belated) June Goals

One of my reoccuring downfalls on my weight loss journey has been setting all my final, big picture goals up front and then rarely setting smaller, more bite-sized goals along the way. As a result, every time I stumbled on my diet or gain a few pounds here or there, I saw my progress through the lens of the larger goal and found myself getting discouraged because I had "such a long way to go", and would forget that one, bad day doesn't ruin everything and that I just needed to forget yesterday's failure and focus on winning today. I've never been good at that...

So in an attempt to combat this cycle from rearing its ugly head anymore, I'm going to take some time at the beginning of each month to set some goals for myself for the upcoming 30 days. I think I'll give a few, different kinds of goals: weight, nutrition, activity and maybe something unrelated to weight loss.

Before I get into my June goals, let me backtrack a little and talk about May. My efforts - on a scale of 1 to 10 - probably registered only about a 4.5 last month. I had a couple weeks where I ate well and got to the gym 4-6 times a week, but the other half of the month I avoided the gym, at donuts for breakfast and enjoyed way too much soda. However, I still managed to lose 8-10 pounds last month despite my efforts not to, haha.

For June, I've found a new source of motivation to help me through the summer. Some of the women at work started a Biggest Loser type of contest and asked me to join! The prize is yet to be determined, but I'm still really excited about it. I'll get more into that at a later date. On to the goals!

By July 1st, here are some things I want to say I've accomplished:

- Lose 15-20 pounds so I can get myself back into the 250s
- Avoid all non-diet soda
- Be able to run 5 miles without stopping
- Gain 50 combined Twitter followers/YouTube subscribers/Facebook page 'Likes'
- Blog at least once a week
- Read one Runner's World and one Men's Health

I like the list I've put together here! They encompass a lot of the different areas I want to work on and allow me to make smaller steps forward in all of them! I'll lose weight, develop healthier habits by dropping soda, work towards my goal of 'being a runner,' improve my online presence and gain knowledge my reading! Man, I love these!

So there ya go! Let me know your thoughts on my goals, and I want to know what YOU want to accomplish in June! I'm real pumped about this, can't you tell? :)

IT HAS ARRIVED!

I almost became giddy yesterday when a coworker dropped a UPS package off at my desk that I've been anticipating since my dealer friend sent it on its way.

I'm enthralled with anything that collects and spits out numerical data - especially if it has to deal with weight loss! For a while, I entertained the possibility of buying a FitBit - I have friends who currently use it and cannot say enough about how it motivates them to be more active and how it's helped them drop weight. However, I couldn't find a used one or one that wasn't being sold for full price, so I looked elsewhere.

I then heard about something called the Nike+ FuelBand. I'd seen commercials on TV for it and checked out the website and thought that looked pretty cool too. And you know what? Turns out a friend was looking to sell his - bingo!

Well as I said, that package came yesterday. I then got it charged last night and strapped it on first thing this morning before hitting the gym. To be honest, I still don't ACTUALLY know what NikeFuel is at this point... I just know it's different than calories. I guess it's some sort of 'measurement of activity?' Either way, the mobile and desktop applications let you set a daily goal for yourself and you can monitor your progress right on the band (see picture). Today my goal is 3,000 units of NikeFuel. As I type this I'm at  2,412.

Turns out that having a primarily desk-oriented job doesn't bode well for movement and activity. So therefore I'm either going to have to get out and take a walk during my lunch break on days that aren't too busy or a nighttime walk with my wife - or both! I'll definitely be keeping you posted.

What kinds of weight loss tools/toys like this do YOU utilize?

13.1 Miles ... x 2?

Alright, come in close, everyone.

As you know, I've recently signed up for the Chicago 13.1 Marathon on June 9th. Well, I also found out that there's this thing called the Windy City Challenge.

The Windy City Challenge consists of the Chicago 13.1 Marathon (6/9/2012) and the Chicago Half Marathon (9/9/2012). If a person accomplishes running BOTH races this year, you are awarded a THIRD medal! When I read this, I knew I just had to do it!

Well, rather than just simply pay the entrance fee to get my name in the running, I decided to make it a little more challenging. If I weigh less than 240 pounds by the date of my first race, I am allowing myself to sign up for the second one. That means...

I have two and a half months to lose approximately 40 POUNDS

Let's do this, shall we? :) Is anyone else participating in the Windy City Challenge?

The Secret to Success

Efficiency

It's something that I used to spend WAY too much energy on (and still do, to a point). I make checklists, make plans, make schedules, make spreadsheets only to end up remaking plans, remaking schedules, etc. This goes for work, for chores around the house and especially for setting a plan to lose weight.

But should I be focusing on being the most EFFICIENT I can be?

Instead of trying to be perfectly efficient and not waste any time, I think it may just be more important to be perfectly consistent instead. If you consistently keep the same routine and discipline yourself to get to the gym in the morning, make it to work on time, have your meals at similar times of the day and get enough sleep every night, the efficiency will come as a result of your consistency.

If you form good habits, only good results can come from it. This has been an issue for me over the past year or so. I can have spurts of greatness, but can't hold myself to a consistent schedule and plan for more than a couple of weeks.

So that's my goal. One day at a time, one meal at a time, one decision at a time. Get enough sleep every night and get to the gym on time in the morning. Eat a good breakfast before work and keep the snacking at bay while sitting at my desk all day. (The latter point is my biggest downfall.) But I'm also going to be putting together a plan of sorts so I know what I'm supposed to be doing at the gym every morning.

What kind of routine actions do you do every day to make sure
you're as healthy and fit as you can be?

Change Is Hard

Tonight I've had an epiphany of sorts.

I've made it a habit of trying to breakdown my screwy mindset with this whole losing weight process. I know that I can achieve my goal physically (because I got went from 240-215 during the summer of 2005), but I feel that something needs to click mentally before I can get back to that.

Summer of '05 after my first 10k race (215 lbs)

Do I need to have my world rocked by scary, physical statistics about unhealthy I am? Oh wait, I've been there and done that. Maybe I need to do some physical accomplishment so I can realize what I'm capable of if I put my mind to it. What? I've run four half marathons? Darn...

Sometimes I just sit back, throw up my arms and wonder, "So what needs to click?!?"

Well after talking with my wonderful wife this evening, I think I've narrowed down some things. Maybe I'm scared and intimidated by the lifestyle changes I'd have to endure in order to reach my goal. Could it be that my innate desire to be comfortable and inconvenienced supersedes my desire to put in the work to lose 75 pounds?

Let's hope not.

Does the bad food really taste that good? Nope.  Do I lack support and encouragement not only from family members, but also from those who have accomplished last weight loss before me? Not at all! Am I just being a lazy wuss who doesn't want to "work too hard" to accomplish not only a wanted goal, but a NEEDED one? Now we might be onto something...

Every day that passes is one day closer to my 'goal date' - I need to be making better use of these days!

Me. Gym. 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Goal Picture!

So I was trying to organize my pictures the other day when I came across one from 2003 (I think). It's a picture of me and my triplet cousins at a family wedding. I want to say that I was under 200 pounds in this picture. It would be the summer after I graduated from high school.

Since I think I look pretty decent in this picture, I'm going to officially label this as my 'goal picture.' If I could look like this again I think life would be pretty sweet. Now to find a piece of 'goal clothing' to try to fit into!

Believing vs. Doing

I thought about making a video on this topic, but figured I was due for a blog post anyway, so here I am! I know some of you may be wondering what happened to my posts about the 90-Day Challenge...well, Thanksgiving happened and threw off my posting schedule, but they will be back in full force soon!

But anyway, the topic of 'belief vs. action' came up in our church small group last night and someone used the example of knowing that eating right and exercising is good for you, but doing those things doesn't always follow right behind. Logically it should, but that's rarely the case.

I've actually been beating myself up a lot lately because I do the same thing. I have the knowledge and know-how to lose weight and eat right, but day in and day out I still make mistakes and bad choices that keep me treading water rather than moving towards my goal. And it frustrates me to no end knowing what I'm capable of, yet squandering my days away and making no progress. Unfortunately the frustration and and anger of failing time after time really knocks down my confidence and self-esteem and leaves me wondering (or doubting) if I'll ever be able to accomplish this.

That thinking then turns itself into a self-fulfilling a prophecy and what do you know? I'm left with regret for the day that I've wasted and the pounds I've not lost (or even have gained). That then translates into eating poorly and skipping workouts due to the bad moods. It seems to be a vicious cycle I can't seem to shake myself out of.

I've determined that I have a hard time focusing on the next step I have to take and am distracted by the big, overall goal. I always have "lose 80 pounds" looming over my head while I should be focusing on eating healthy for my next meal, or making my next day's workout count. I know I want to run a marathon, but have a hard time making sure I can run 2 miles at a time. But I just can't get myself to consistently do so without slip ups, collapses and failures.

I have many questions as to how I can be able to change my mindset or focus, and not nearly enough answers. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. I've thought time and time again that I've found the motivation to get my mind focused, but it fizzles out quickly. So I'm left wondering what's wrong. What do I need to do to finally get my mind in the right place to accomplish my goals? I'm open to any suggestions you may have, but I feel it's just something that I need to keep working at.

90-Day Challenge - Days 4-6

So apparently I'm taking weekends off in documenting the 90-Day challenge. If you're new to the program, check out the Day 1 post to see where I'm coming from. Anywho, over the weekend I didn't really read the Days 4 & 5 challenges, so I'm taking them all on today! Let's join the action.

Day #4: "Dreams & Visions" - Take time to devise a plan for reaching your goal. What things do you plan to do daily to make that dream a reality? Write down five mini-goals you will achieve on your way to your overall goal.

1) I always found it intimidating to look at my goal as "losing 80 pounds." This time around, I plan to take it in 10 pound increments and climb this mountain with smaller steps. 2) I also plan to make changes in my diet - no more soda or fast food! Those were two of the culprits in my weight gain. 3) In order to achieve these goals I can't be idle - I need to be active everyday! 4) I want to learn about what I'm trying to achieve. Whether that means watching documentaries or reading magazines, I want to expand my knowledge in the realm of health and fitness. 5) I feel that documenting and keeping track of my accomplishments will keep my morale and motivation up. So I'm logging my weight every week so I can see my progress.

Day #5: "Faith Matters" - You may not know what your body will look like after dropping 30 or 50 pounds, but let faith fuel you to picture yourself a skinnier person or fitting into your old clothes. "Faith works by love, so if you have unforgiveness in your heart toward anyone, release that burden so God can work in your life.... Whether it's writing a letter/email or calling someone on the phone, the less emotional baggage you have, the easier it will be to focus on losing the physical weight."

Off the top of my head, I don't think I have anyone that I really need to forgive - I'm pretty solid in that department. My faith in myself, on the other hand, is what needs to be strengthened. After coming up short so many times, my confidence in my ability to finish this journey grows less and less...
Day #6: "New Thrills" - Write down on activity you have avoided because of your weight or other insecurities. Describe why you avoided it and how it made you feel. Now imagine how you would feel doing that activity as the new, thinner you - full of energy!

Despite LOVING sports, I've felt quite insecure and self-conscious participating in sports with friends. Whether it's a pick-up game of football or just going for a run, I think too much about how big I might look and sometimes shy away from joining in the fun. When I lose the weight, I can't WAIT to run circles around people and not have to worry about what's jiggling around! :)

Alright, I think we're all caught up! These are some pretty important things to think about while trying to lose weight. Forget about what other people may think of you - this is YOUR time to make these changes and get healthy! What are some of your responses to these challenges?

90 Day Fitness Challenge - Day 1

I've started and re-started this book many times, but I've decided to give it a go once again. Now I understand that it may not be the best idea to start some sort of health and fitness challenge right before Thanksgiving and Christmas, but maybe some challenges are what I need to keep my mindset and self-control in line with all that holiday food staring me in the face!

So for the next 90 days I will be attempting the "90 Day Fitness Challenge." It's created by Phil & Amy Parham - two former contestants on the popular reality show, "The Biggest Loser." They begin the book by telling their journey and telling you tips on what helped them not only while on the BL ranch, but also once they got home and didn't have the help of Bob & Jillian.

Each day I will try to post the day's challenge, and if I forget, I'll catch up with my next post. Some of them will be easy or be something I've already accomplished in my weight loss journey, and others will be quite difficult or impossible to do. Other daily challenges may deal with mindset, relationships or faith.

If you're interested in learning more about Phil & Amy or the challenge you can visit their website

Challenge #1:
Before embarking on any journey, it's important to plan it out. Losing weight is no different. The first challenge is to write out your goals on a Post It Note or sheet of paper and post it somewhere you'll see it everyday. I'll probably put one on my computer at home and one at work. For starters, I listed my overall goal of losing 80 pounds. I also want to be strong over the holidays! Eliminating soda and fast food are also goals that I need to accomplish if I want to reach my goal.

What are some of your goals?

*REBOOT*

After a weekend filled with pizza and soda, I think it's time to take a step back and gather myself (since I put on a few pounds, especially) and just write a little post about where I am and where I am aiming to be by next summer. Now I know some of you are probably thinking "okay, here goes Jordan once again 'recommitting' to this - I bet he'll forget all about this in a couple of weeks."
Not my feet, I promise

Now I don't blame the nay-sayers since I've really never given anyone any reason to believe that I'm actually going to go through with this at any point, but I do thank those of you who still believe that I'm capable of finishing what I keep starting! But anywhere, where do I begin?

Monday morning I weighed in back up at 272 pounds again - right up there with my heaviest I've ever been. I wasn't happy to see that number creep back onto my scale, but I wasn't completely surprised since I've been around there for the last couple of months, unfortunately. But I also made a decision that I can't let that number get any higher. So here's my tentative schedule/game plan.

Over the years I've tried too hard to lose the weight. I'd try to work out everyday and eat perfectly only to burn out after a couple weeks. So I'm trying to take it a little slower this time. I'm aiming to lose an average of 10 pounds a month. Doing so would put me at goal in June or July (goal being 190 lbs). But I don't want to get too ahead of myself. Gotta take things one day at a time!

On a daily basis, I'm aiming to get to the gym nice and early in the morning (6am), eat less than 2,000 calories a day and drink TONS of water. I'll have to say 'no' to soda for a while too...bummer. Along with these things, I hope that healthy choices make all the difference as I attempt to do this. It's usually the saying-no-to-food part that trips me up every time!

So here goes! Feel free to stay up-to-date with my progress on the Weight Loss page where I update my weight and graph a few times a week. Also feel free to visit my YouTube channel where I'll be making weigh in videos every Monday.

No-Nonsense November!

I've been pretty good lately about getting up early during the week to head over to the gym. Notice I said that I'm good at the 'getting up' part...not necessarily the 'going to the gym' part. I don't know why, but it takes me at least a half hour to muster up the energy and willpower to get my butt down the stairs, into my car, and to the gym - if I make it at all!

I blame the internet. Don't point fingers at my lack of self-discipline or my laziness - I blame the interwebs! Ok, so maybe I'm a tad slow in the morning, but who isn't?!? I always like to have a nice time waking up before bolting off to the day's first appointment. I want to be awake so I don't trip over my feet and eat the treadmill belt. Not the breakfast of champions...

6:00am is early for a gym visit, but I gotta make it happen!
But in all honesty, it's going to come down to me being able to say 'No!' to Facebook and YouTube at 6:00am and "Yes!" to lacing up my running shoes and making my way to the gym. My fantasy football rosters can wait a couple of hours; those pictures on Facebook will still be there when I get home; and my body could sure use the extra 25 minutes of calorie burning!

November and December are going to be make-or-break months for me, I can smell it already. October? Forget about October - I've already left it in the past! I only managed to lose a measly four net pounds over the last 31 days (it was an up-and-down month) . I could lose that in two day if I actually tried! But looking forward over the next 60 days I see Thanksgiving and Christmas staring me in the face - along with all of the delicious food that comes along with them. Over the next 3 weeks, I've made it my goal to lose 15-20 pounds before the dreaded Thanksgiving feast rears its ugly head. And don't worry, I haven't made it my goal to put those 15-20 pounds back on with turkey, stuffing and cider!

So here's to a solid month of hard work, no cheating and losing weight! Who's with me? What are your goals from now until Thanksgiving? What are you going to do to stick to them?
